It takes a lot of courage to be visibly different. Many of us who do not fit into the neat boxes of the norm choose to hide how we are different, unless we know for sure that in that particular time and place it is safe to be seen. And in our white-dominated communities, there are many who have no choice but to be seen – and yet we render them invisible in so many ways in our daily life…

We are thrilled to announce our new Executive Director, Marya Skrypiczajko. Marya comes to the Council with a deep understanding of food systems in BC and locally.

On April 26th, we hosted a special council AGM facilitated by Michele A Sam, who weaved together our regular AGM business with an interactive exploration of the principles of the Ktunaxa Creation Story. The session was a wonderful opportunity to explore some of the principles of the Ktunaxa Creation Story and how they can be applied to both the work of the Council and its members.

At the Food Policy Council, we often talk about “place-based food systems”. We seek to highlight that food is not disembodied – it comes from a place, is the fruit of the earth, the water, the air, and the people who tend and harvest it. But it is also about embracing the people, ecosystems and cultures of that place…
