CKFPC AT FABx2023
Introduction:
The Central Kootenay Food Policy Council (CKFPC) was a proud sponsor and collaborator at this year’s Basin Food & Buyers Expo (FABx) in Creston. Our involvement included a meaningful exploration of Yaqan Nukiy Farms, an enlightening talk by Dr. Colin Dring, and our participation in the vibrant Community Farm to Table Dinner.
Yaqan Nukiy Farms Tour
On November 3rd, 2023, CKFPC members and regional chefs had the unique opportunity to visit the Yaqan Nukiy Farms, a ranching operation of the Lower Kootenay Band (LKB). Attendees were transported via shuttle from the expo and welcomed with a tractor-pulled hay bale trailer, setting the tone for an authentic ranch experience.
The ranch manager’s personal guidance offered us valuable insights into the farm’s practices, seasonal operations, and its synergy with the local ecosystem. This hands-on tour provided an understanding of life and work at Yaqan Nukiy Farms, a direct connection to the livestock and insight into the care and consideration taken when working with the land.
Community Farm to Table Dinner
The Community Farm to Table Dinner, hosted in the magical setting of LKB’s Morris Flowers greenhouse, was a highlight of FABx. The evening came alive with lights, a curated menu featuring local produce, and seating for 200 guests. Chief Nasukin Louie’s opening speech was a heartfelt reminder of the ongoing journey he and his people continue to walk, highlighting the power in meaningful connections and his gratitude towards local farmers that have become allies of his people.
The CKPC was honoured to support the purchase of the beef from Yaqan Nukiy Farms to serve at the dinner and to be a part of this memorable evening of rich community connection.
Exploring Food Justice with Dr. Colin Dring
Dr. Colin Dring’s talk, ‘Exploring Food Justice Through Alternative Food Systems’, was a cornerstone of our educational journey at FABx. His insights provided a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within our food systems, emphasizing the need for justice and equity in food accessibility. The graphic created from his talk further illuminated these critical concepts.
The Power of Collaboration
This year’s FABx was a testament to the power of collaboration. As CKFPC, we were thrilled to support and be part of this dynamic event. Our involvement in sponsoring the farm tour and Dr. Dring’s talk showcased our commitment to educational and enriching experiences. The tour of Yaqan Nukiy Farms, enjoyed by council members, retailers, and chefs, was a perfect alignment with our goals of fostering understanding and support within our community’s food systems.
We look forward to continuing these partnerships and bringing more impactful experiences to our community.
